Discover Massage Excellence With Cameron Aubrey

We chat to Discover Massage Australia’s Founder and Director, Cameron Aubrey, to find out his advice for growing a successful natural therapy business and what he loves about IICT.

Discover Massage Australia is the oldest and most experienced “hands on” training school in Australia. When did you first begin and what inspired this decision?

The massage school was first founded in 1997 by a previous owner. I was working part-time at home as a remedial massage therapist and was also working a full-time job in another industry. On the weekends, I was the Melbourne instructor for the school. It got to a point where I felt I could improve the school due to my teaching skills, massage skills and marketing/sales background. The previous owner wanted to retire so it was a perfect time to purchase the business. Immediately, we changed the name to Discover Massage Australia as it was a better fit for the massage industry. We also quickly grew the business to deliver courses in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth.

What is your top advice for growing a business within the natural therapies space?

  • Be professional and exceed your customers’ expectations
  • Research great marketing ideas in the natural therapy space
  • Reward clients for referring clients
  • Build networks and use existing networks
  • Share what you do with people

You refer IICT to lots of your graduates. What is it about IICT that you love the most?

I love that IICT can offer industry membership to many different modalities. Their professionalism is second to none and the way they help their members through value for money and marketing ideas is a credit to the team. This is why I refer lots of students to IICT as I want the best for my graduates and students.

What are some of the feedback you’ve received from your graduates and students about their experience dealing with IICT?

The constant feedback we get from our students about IICT is how easy they are to deal with. The membership packages offered are the best in the industry and also include comprehensive insurance policies. IICT’s expert marketing advice helps our students start their massage businesses. The staff are also very friendly and helpful.

What advice would you give to a graduate massage therapist about to enter the industry?

  • Be confident in the skills you have been taught
  • Be professional at all times
  • How you present will reflect on your business and influence the type of customers you attract
  • Back yourself as a massage therapist and always find ways to market your business to grow it
  • There are many opportunities in the industry so stay open to them
  • Develop your massage techniques and up-skill when the time is right and you have the funds available
  • Never feel pressured
  • Practice, practice, practice
  • Enjoy massages yourself and learn what you like and don’t like
  • Become the best version of yourself and go for it

What advice should they ignore?

The inference “You aren’t a good therapist if you have only done a short course.” There are plenty of people with their own agendas that are trying to put others down. Ignore them and continue your path.
